Reasons Continuing Education Is Your Best Networking Tool

By Amanda Lewis

If you’re looking for a way to build your network professionally or personally, you have to creatively seek groups of people you’ve never met before. Whether you want to expand your business network, build your clientele, or meet social contacts, professional and personal enrichment classes are the perfect unexpected venue for growing your network. Here’s why:

You’ll Meet Like-Minded People

Networking is all about making connections. When you take an adult education course, you can build and expand your network by connecting with the other people in the class. You’re likely to already have some common interest, which makes breaking the ice easy. Meeting similar-minded people puts you in a better position to hear about potential work opportunities, trends and happenings in the industry.

Network Before You Need to

Building a network of people who trust you and think you’re talented will be invaluable to your career, and especially during a job search. But before you build your network, you have to build relationships. Taking a class, any class, gives you the opportunity to talk to people. Go to lunch. Meet for coffee before class. Stay connected through social media. The key here is to understand that networking is not about what other people can do for you. Consider what knowledge, skills, or insight you have that you can offer. This generosity is sure to be appreciated and more likely to be reciprocated should you need to ask for something later.

Meet Professionals in Your Field

Continuing Education instructors are field experts and well connected in their respective industries. They also are likely to have numerous personal and professional contacts that they might connect qualified students with. Another advantage here is the small class sizes and direct one-on-one opportunities you have with the instructor and other participants. This lessens the intimidation factor associated with traditional networking events, because it eliminates the obligation to work the room. For those who are introverts, this is especially advantageous,

but everyone truly benefits from the familiarity of a small group. It’s an opportunity to focus on the quality of the contact rather than the quantity.

Everyone is Important

Whether you’ve registered for a course in Pilates or project management, everyone around you has potential to influence your network. Your classmates might hold positions at varying levels of authority in an industry. Take the initiative to introduce yourself. Remember names and titles, exchange business cards. This could be your next reference. Find people who are experienced in the areas in which you want to be experienced; talk to them and learn from them.

You’ll Challenge Yourself to Learn a New Skill

There is a saying that if you’re the smartest one in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Taking a course means that you are looking for new knowledge, and that means you are in the presence of someone who knows something you don’t know. Learn from this person. Ask him how he got into his current job, what resources he recommends, what books you should read. Consider also taking a personal enrichment class that challenges you creatively. You never know, maybe that new watercolor technique you learned is your next great icebreaker at a future networking event.

ultivating a Culture of High Performance

In September of 2014, Columbus State University’s new Center for Professional Solutions kicked-off service to the corporate community in Columbus with a Lean Six-Sigma Yellow Belt Certification workshop. The workshop was offered in partnership with Riverwood Associates, an Atlanta-based company that provides operational training and consulting to organizations working to improve performance levels, and was hosted by Synovus. The Center for Professional Solutions is a new service of Columbus State University’s Division of Continuing Education that focuses on performance improvement through consultation and training to the Columbus, GA region. “We aim to be the primary resource within our region for helping companies identify and close the gap between current and desired performance,” says Susan Wirt, Executive Director for Continuing Education. The core offerings of the Center for Professional Solutions include Lean Six Sigma, project management, outsourcing contracts, labor issues and risk management, contract law and intellectual property for the business manager. In addition, the center provides information technology and business intelligence consultation and training in partnership with Columbus State’s IT Innovation Center. Groups from the private and public sector came together for this event at Synovus to learn proven techniques and practical tools for reducing waste, increasing profitability, improving quality and driving overall business improvement.

By Kristin Barker Lean Six Sigma offers a powerful methodology and set of tools for improving business processes. Many organizations have adopted Lean Six Sigma — manufacturing, service, healthcare and government — to significantly improve their bottom line and customer experience. The Yellow Belt is the first step for those new to Lean Six Sigma. This Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification was the second in a series of workshops offered through this unique partnership. Peter J. Sherman, Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt with 20+ years of experience, lead this day of training. One goal of this certification is to cultivate a culture of high organizational performance and to provide a high performance workforce with solid skills in problem solving, analytical and critical thinking and decision-making. Participants, working in teams, learned how to prepare a Voice of the Customer (VOC), map a current state process to identify and quantify gaps, and perform root cause analysis. When asked why Lean Six Sigma is so important, Peter replied, “Organizations are looking for people who can break down problems and solve them quickly and effectively. The skills we learned today are relevant for anyone in today’s workforce.” Forty-seven participants benefited from this learning environment charged by the synergies created among the diverse group of participants as they became certified Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belts. Participants from the private sector included Aflac, Columbus Specialty Hospital, Communicorp, DMI Columbus, Golden Peanut, Kellogg, Panasonic Energy Corporation, Paragon Benefits, OmegaFi, Synovus and Tensar. Those from the public sector included Columbus State University, Columbus Water Works and the Muscogee County School System. Information about the Green Belt program can be found online at ColumbusState.edu/CE or www.riverwoodassociates.com.

ine Art, Personified: Meet Photography Instructor Tania Calderon

By Amanda Lewis

Sit down with any photographer and expect to have a conversation in line with the mechanics of their work. Sit down with Tania Calderon, and you’ll quickly understand that she is the living, breathing element that makes her work come to life. Hers is no ordinary art-imitates-life kind of story. The new ideas she brings are influencing the way Columbus photographers approach their own work. According to Tania, the Rankin studio is her favorite place in Columbus. “If it was allowed, I’d live there just so I could wake up inspired.” It’s no surprise she feels right at home in the studio located just down the hall from Columbus State’s Dance Conservatory. Ballet was Tania’s first art form. When an injury forced her to give up dance, she used photography to capture the grace and elegance of movement. Appreciation of the human form, its contours, shades and lines has been Tania’s inspiration. Her simple, organic approach produces fine art images that have received acclaim. Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine nominated Tania “Best of Atlanta” 2010 and 2011. She has been a featured photographer in exhibits for the annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography festival, Columbus Photographers 2014, and most recently in the Rankin’s own Desire: Ten Photographers. Her solo exhibit

Season of Bliss has inspired her to publish a book of the show’s images. Tania’s experiences make her a valuable asset to Columbus State’s Digital Photography Certificate Program. She invents new courses to bring to the line-up. Her Fine Art Portraits class began in the winter of 2014 and shows photographers a new approach to portrait work. Tania teaches her students concepts that go beyond the technical aspects of photography. She demonstrates her mastery of posing using her understanding of movement and the human form. Using a live model, she shows how important it is for the photographer to engage and connect her subject with the camera.

This fall Tania will lend her talent to our new Graphic Design Certificate program as lead the lead instructor for Adobe Photoshop for the Graphic Artist (page 2). For a complete list of Tania’s photography courses see page 26.

athy Nail: Overcoming the Odds to Help Others Achieve Their Goals

By Kristin Barker

The best kind of fitness program for you depends on your goals, so what is the BEST type of workout according to Cathy?

Columbus State University, Continuing Education fitness instructor, Cathy Nail, has always enjoyed music and movement. As a child, activities like dance and exercise seemed very natural to Cathy, and thankfully, her parents encouraged her in both of these areas.

If you want to increase balance, flexibility, and strengthen without bulking up, Yoga and Pilates are both great workout options for you. Cathy likes to balance resistance training with fluid (Yoga/Pilates) training. If you want to tone and gain cardio benefits, one of Cathy’s favorite workouts uses a variety of hand weights and a step to deliver a comprehensive routine that offers resistance training and cardio without high impact. “The most important concept to embrace is to try many different things,” Cathy advises. “You won’t know what you enjoy until you give it a try.” Your favorite activity might be something that you never dreamed you would love!

Life hasn’t always been easy for Cathy. She is hearing impaired which requires her to compensate in many ways, but thankfully technology is advancing and there are now devices and apps that send conversations directly to a hearing aid. When someone is hearing impaired, they must actively work to hear by staying focused and directly involved in the conversation. Teaching in a group can also be challenging. Cathy always explains that she is hearing impaired during the initial class session. “Sometimes I believe my hearing impairment makes me a better communicator because I have to maintain eye contact and truly focus on the person I’m speaking with.”

Cathy loves to encourage others. This is one of the reasons that she likes to teach classes with Continuing Education. “I love the people, the facility, and the staff at CSU’s Continuing Education program,” says Cathy. “It has always been a rewarding experience, and I’ve met some wonderful people along the way. It is increasingly important to me to be healthy and to share what I know with others.” With Cathy, it doesn’t matter where you are, there is always an opportunity to start something new, and she knows that CSU’s Continuing Education gives people a chance to do this. Cathy teaches Pilates Essentials and Sculpt and Tone for Continuing Education. Find out more about her courses on page 31.

Cathy Nail began teaching fitness classes after her two children were born back-to-back. “I wanted to get back to my ‘normal’ activity level,” Cathy says, “and a very good friend who was also a new mother began taking exercise classes.” Cathy decided to join her. She loved it so much that she became certified to teach. Cathy has been nationally certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE®) for over 27 years and also has certifications in Body Pump®, Body Attack®, Pilates, Yoga, Reebok Step® and cycling. Cathy also recently completed a mind-body specialty certification through ACE because, as Cathy states, “I believe the integration of a healthy body and mind serves to enhance a positive lifestyle.”
